Initially, the main tomb was enclosed within rectangular walls, built of rubble. This chamber was constructed by Muhammad Bin Tughlaq, who later added a small gateway on both sides of the tomb. However, the original Chiragh-I-Dili Dargah has undergone renovations and repairs a number of times. Now, a twelve-pillared square chamber, enclosed within perforated screens, consists of the tomb of Nasir-ud-Din Mahmud. The chamber has four small domed towers at the corners and is surmounted by a plastered dome, rising from an octagonal drum.
A number of structures, like the Majlis-Khana (assembly hall), Mahfil-Khana (symposium hall), were added to the Delhi Hazrat Roshan Chiragh-e-Delhi Dargah shareef some time back. The structure also comprises of a graveyard, which houses the graves and tombs of several distinguished personalities. Last but not the least, there are a number of mosques situated inside the premises of the dargah. One of these mosques was built by King Farrukhsiyar, in the early 18th century, in the honour of Hazrat Khwaja Naseer-ud-Din Mahmud ( Rahmatullah Allaih ).

BASIC FACTS:
Birth Name:
Syed Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani
Born in:
Jilan, Iran.
Date of Birth:
1st Ramadan, 471 Hijri in Jilan, Iran.
IN DEPTH:
Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) was born into a pious Syed family of Jilan (in Iran). His father name was Hazrat Abu Saleh Moosa Jangi Dost, who was an extremely virtuous person and was married to the equally saintly daughter of Hazrat Syed Abdullah Saumai ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ), a well-known divine of his time.
The name of his mother was Hazrata Fatima , a pious lady, who gave birth to him when she was 60 years old. After his birth, he was named as “ Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ).
Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) was considered a great Divine blessing.
A miracle is in the fact that when he was born on 1st Ramzan , From 1st Ramdan ul Mubarak itsel did not drink the milk of his mother during the daytime due to it being the Holy Month of Ramadan (the month of Fasting) until the completion of the entire month. Subhaan allah, allahu akbar.
Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) lost his father at an early age. When he reached the age of 8 or 9, his mother decided to send him away to Baghdad so that he could be properly educated.
Before he left, she told him, to never tell a lie and gave him 40 dinaars for the journey. For safety, she had sewn the coins on the inside of his gown.
After bidding farewell to his mother, Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) joined a caravan destined for Baghdad. Hardly had they reached Hamdan, when suddenly they were attacked by a group of bandits.
A few of the bandits at last approached a poor simple-looking boy sitting quietly at one side.
They asked him "have you got anything with you?"
"Yes", he replied, "I have 40 dinars with me".
The robbers did not believe it and thought that the boy was telling a lie so they took him to their Chief. Their Chief again asked him "You say, you have 40 dinars with you. Where are they?"
The boy tore open a portion of his jacket and took out forty dinars to the utter surprise of the robbers. The Chief enquired "Why do you disclose your precious property?"
The boy replied that "I was instructed by my mother, who had stitched these dinars in my jacket, never to speak a lie".
The Chief was moved to the inner-most depth of his heart and tears rolled down his face. He exclaimed by saying "While I am disobedient to even my Creator, this boy is obedient to his mother." The Chief ordered to return all the looted property to the members of the caravan and renounced his evil ways, thus becoming a devoted Muslim.
Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) never told a lie during his life time. There even exist records to prove that a caravan bound for Baghdad from Jilan (Iran) was encountered by a band of robbers. Along with the caravan, Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) was travelling.
Baghdad was then a great centre of Islamic learning and Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) became the favourite pupil of Hazrat Allama Abu Zakariya Tabrezi, Principal of the Jamia Nizamiah. He studied there for 8 years and acquired mastery in all branches of learning. During this period young Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) had to pass a life of trials and tribulations, including that he passed some of his days under starvation, but he loathed begging of food from any one.
Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) often left the city life and wandered the lonely deserts and jungles of Iraq. He endured hardships and self denial to discipline his self (ego) and purify his soul, heart and mind. He urged his entire self towards Allah as done by Hazrat Syedina Rasulallah ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ). He would recite the Qur’an Sharif and often perform prolonged prayers during the whole night. Often there would be no need for fresh ablution for the morning prayers due to the extent of his worship during the night. He wore a long woollen robe and lived on dates and water.
Once Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ) had nothing to eat for several days and he wandered near the ruins of the palace Kasra in search of Mubah (something which is permissible to eat). But when he reached there he saw 70 other pious men searching for food.
Seeing them, he returned to Baghdad, tired and sad. On the way back he met a foreigner who had a message from his mother; she had sent him some money.
It was a gift from Allah. Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) went back and distributed the money amongst the 70 pious men and kept a little for himself.
After many trials and tribulations, Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) developed tolerance, willpower, great determination and complete faith in Allah. He avoided situations and conditions that would disturb his prayers as he longed for closeness towards Allah. He uplifted those standards of quality and steadfastness according to which Allah measures His aspirant Loved Ones.
Once Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) resolved neither to eat or drink or change dress until he was given all those by a pious person favoured by Allah Subhaanahu thaalah. Thirty nine (39) days passed in this manner by meditation and prayer.
On the 40th day someone left a plate of food by his side and went away. Although he was attracted towards the food due to hunger, he did not break his pledge. Also he was a Syed, and if the food was Zakat or charity then it was forbidden to him. Hence, he decided not to partake the food.
After sometime his teacher, Hazrat Abu Saeed Mubarak Maqqomi ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) arrived and enquired about his welfare and invited Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) to his house. He accepted his master’s invitation and informed that his nafs (self) was restless but his spirit was blessed by Allah subhaanahu thaalah and His secret was now revealed to him.
Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez )'s successful struggle made the master so happy that he served Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez )'s food with his own hands. He also awarded Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) the khiqa (robe) and made him his Khalifa.
The teacher also informed him that the robe was that of Hazrat Sydina Rasulallah ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ) who had bestowed it to Syedina Hazrat Ali Karam Allahu Wajhu and thereafter it passed on through generations, from saint to saint, until it had reached him.
On completion of his education, Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) set out to acquire spiritual training. He spent several long years undergoing the rigorous and spiritual life, and passing his time in meditation and in search of truth & Allah.
Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) had come to Baghdad to serve humanity, but moral degeneration and Islamic values exploited by men in power disgusted him. He decided to leave Baghdad and help people in the rural areas.
With the Holy Qur’an in his hands, he left the city but he had hardly reached Bab-e-Halbah on the outskirts of Baghdad when he heard a voice restraining him from leaving Baghdad. It was the will of Allah and so Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) returned to Baghdad. The next day while he was passing through a street, an elderly man opened a door and greeted Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ). He enquired about his earlier intentions on leaving the city and then closed the door. Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) was shocked as his intentions were not disclosed to anyone and wondered how this stranger could have known about it.
After many days Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) saw the same elderly man passing through the street and he was invited to his house. Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) went to the house of Hazrat Sheikh Hammad Al Dabbas ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) who was a Syrain and a syrup vendor. This dervish was a reputed saint of Baghdad and emphasized spiritual training, Tasawwuf and Tareeqat. He taught the student to act in consonance with the will of Allah while maintaining their individuality.
Hazrat Hammad al Dabbas ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) adored Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) and gave special attention and trained him in Tasawwuf. At first, Sufi religious aspirants did not include Aalim (scholar) and Faqih (Jurist).
Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) paved the way to change this; he was a Sufi, Aalim and Faqih.
Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) was also gifted the title of Mohiuddin i.e. the reviver of faith.
In the year 511 AH, Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) saw in a vision that he was walking along a street in Baghdad. There he met on the roadside an old and sick man who greeted him with Salaam and asked him to help him get up. Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) answered his salutation and helped him up. No sooner did Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul azeez ) help him, the man's health improved dramatically and his stature healed.
Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) was wonderstruck and a little afraid, but the man allayed his fear and said, “I am Islam, the religion of your grandfather. I had become diseased and poorly but Allah has revived me through your help.
Later at a public appearance in the mosque, a man came and addressed Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) as ‘Ya Syed Mohiuddin’ and since then people have addressed him with this name.
Blessed by Allah’s Messenger Syedina Rasoolallah ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ), he became a great preacher, orator and reformer.
Once in Shawwal 521 AH, Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) saw Allah’s Messenger ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ) in his dream advising him to make a speech and to impart his knowledge to others.
Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) asked to be blessed with eloquence as he was an Ajmi (non-Arab). Allah’s Messenger recited the Aayat “Call unto the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preachings’ (16:25) seven times and blew on the face of Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ).
The same day after Zuhr prayer, Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez ) mounted the pulpit and addressed the people with a sermon. The audience were entranced by his words. His assemblies were attended by men of all calibre.
About 400 men remained engaged in recording his speeches (Akhbarul Akhyar).
Many embraced Islam under the influence of his sermons. His fame for learning, piety, inner illumination, truth and strict adherence to Shariah spread all over. People flocked to hear his lectures and benefit from the sermons that covered all aspects of life.

IN DEPTH:
Hazrat Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishty ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) was born in Asfahan and brought up in Sanjar, Persia, in the year 530 AH / 1135 AD, as the son of Hazrat Khwaja Ghyasuddin Chishty and Hazrata Bibi Mah Nur. Hazrat Khwaja Moin uddin ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) was a direct descendant through both his parents, of Hazrat Ali ( Rahmatullah Allaih ).
His birth was a time of chaos and great upheavals in both India and the Muslim Empire as a whole, and so he was orphaned at the tender age of fourteen. Thus raised in the same condition as Nabi-e-Kareem ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ).
But soon there reached a point where social evils, moral degradations and personal tragedy stirred something deep within his young mind, and he began to turn towards the spiritual life.
Once when watering his father's garden, he came across a dervish, Hazrat Ibrahim Qanduzi ( Rahmatullah Allaih ). He was deeply affected by the saint's holy manner, and Hazrat Ibrahim Qanduzi ( Rahmatullah Allaih )'s presence transformed Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishty ( Rahmatullah Allaih )'s inner being. His eyes were opened to the ultimate realities of the spiritual world and so he began his spiritual journey by renouncing all material things. He sold his father's garden, all his possessions and distributed the money amongst the poor.
Hazrat Baba Fareeduddin Ganj-e-Shakkar Piya Chilla in Ajmeer Shareef Main Dargah
Still at a young age, he arrived at the great centres of learning in Samarkand and Bukhara, Uzbekistan, where he swiftly became a Hhafiz and distinguished Alim. But still unsatisfied with this, he began a strict regime of prayers, meditations, fasting and self-renunciation which continued for years and grew more intense and vigorous until Allah granted him the exalted rank of sainthood.
He used to fast for seven days and nights, breaking fast on the eighth with a small crust of bread soaked in water. At this point, he felt the need for a Sheikh, or spiritual guide, feeling the truth of the Qur'anic injunction, "O ye who believe! Be mindful of your duty towards Allah, and seek a means of approach unto Him, and strive in his way in order that ye may succeed." (5:35) .

He himself used to state, "Success is not possible without a guide." He travelled extensively throughout the near East, and finally found a spiritual guide in Hazrat Khwaja Uthman Haruni ( Rahmatullah Allaih ). In the twenty years he spent under his Murshid (spiritual leader)'s guidance, he attained perfection in tasawwuf and was awarded the Khilafat-e-Azam by Khwaja Uthman ( Rahmatullah Allaih ). He offered many pilgrimages both with his Murshid and alone.
It was during one of these, while in Madinah Sharif, that he was directed spiritually by Nabi-e-Kareem ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ) to go to India and spread Islam there.

Once, in Madinah Sharif, Hazrat Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) was paying his respects at the Darbar of Sayyiduna Nabi-e-Kareem ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ) . While he was doing so, a voice was heard saying,
"Wa Alaikumus Salam Ya Qutbul Masha'ikh-e-bahro barr
(Peace be upon you also, O the Head of the Pious of the Earth and the Sea)."
On hearing this, his Murshid said to him, "Now indeed you have reached perfection."
After a full 20 years of hard training in Islamic mysticism under his great Murshid, Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) was bestowed with Khilafat in the Chistiya Silsila.
His Murshid, after advising him, handed over his Asa Mubarak (Sacred Staff), wooden sandals and Musallah (prayer mat) to Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin ( Rahmatullah Allaih ), saying that those Tabarukaat (relics) had come down from Sayyiduna Rasulullah ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ) in succession.
Then in 583 A.H. when he was absorbed in prayer at the Holy Kabah, he heard a voice saying, "O Moinuddin! We are greatly pleased with you. You have been given salvation. Ask for anything that you may like."
He submitted respectfully, "O Allah, give salvation to the followers and disciples of Moinuddin."
A reply was heard, "O Moinuddin, you are accepted by Us. I will give salvation to your followers and disciples and also to those who may enter your fold till the Day of Qayamat."
After performing the Hajj, he was divinely inspired from Madinah Sharif to go to Ajmer (India) to preach Islam; Nabi-e-Kareem ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ) commanded him, "O Moinuddin, you are the Helper of my religion. I entrust to you the country of Hindustan (India). Proceed to Ajmer and spread the light of truth."
Not knowing where Ajmer was situated, the Holy Prophet ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ) appeared in Hazrat Khwaja Sahib ( Rahmatullah Allaih )'s dream and showed him where the city of Ajmer was situated.
Along the way, he stopped in several places including Baghdad, Isfahan and Balkh.
In Baghdad Sharif, he was the guest of Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Rahmatullah Allaih ), the King of all saints and founder of the Qadriya Silsila. Hazrat Ghaus-ul Azam ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) organised a Qawwali in his own house for the visitors, and he himself stood outside that night, with eyes closed and his staff tightly held against the ground. When asked the reason for this, he replied, "I needed to stop the ground shaking, such was the power of Khwaja's wajd."
Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishty ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) and his disciples were in a cave in the mountains of the Hindu Kush when one of the most famous events in Sufi history occurred. Hundreds of miles away, in Baghdad Sharif, Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) pronounced his Chieftainship of all Awliya Allah by saying, "My foot is on the neck of all Walis."
Spiritually hearing the great Saint's statement, Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishty ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) immediately threw himself down and pressed his neck against the floor, signifying his submission to that truth.
It was because of this type of humble obedience that Allah granted him the title, Sultan-e-Hind, for he is the leader and spiritual head to all the hundreds of Walis that have blessed India in after-times. Indeed, it was that Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishty ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) who arrived in India at a time of tremendous upheaval and moral decay. The Ghaznavi dynasty was in its last steps, and the Rajput kings were gaining power. Tyrannical rulers were making life unbearable for common people, especially the Muslims whose numbers were diminishing day by day.

Yet India is not named "the land of Saints and Sufis" for just any reason; its people had inherited a wealth of spirituality that yearned for expression. It was into such an arena that Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishty ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) stepped, a torch to India's tinder.
First he went to Lahore, a centre of learning where resided a great number of Muslim theologians, philosophers and sufis. Yet he soon left this place, for his divinely guided mission was not to men such as these, but rather to those who were deprived of the light of Islam.
Thus he arrived in Delhi, which was to become the seat of his most famous successors. At the time, the city was a place of much fear and mutual hatred between Hindus and Muslims, but Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishty ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) began delivering his sermons in a soft and sweet tone. As a result of this kindness and forbearance, both Hindus and Muslims were turned towards the path of truth. The great Wali was revered and loved by those of both religions, a trend which, was to be the hallmark of Sufism in India.
Soon, however, he left Delhi too, heading instead for the remote city of Ajmer by the command of Nabi-e-Kareem ( Sal-lal-lahu alaihi wa sallam ), deep within the kingdom of the most powerful Rajput Prince in Northern India, Raj Prithviraj.
This city was completely alien to Islam; no Muslims at all lived within its bounds. It was in this hostile environment that Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishty ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) and his forty disciples settled and began the bulk of his teaching. Very soon, however, he changed the entire civic atmosphere, gathering people of all races, castes and stations to the shining truth of Islam. His high morals and frugal lifestyle deeply impressed the Hindus and all the while, the beautiful messages of the Qur'an and Sunnah entered deep into their hearts. Soon they started to convert, multitudes upon multitudes, and the Prince became alarmed as even his courtiers and high-ranking servants took up Islam.
It is interesting here to note that the Prince's mother had predicted the arrival of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishty ( Rahmatullah Allaih ), and had warned her son not to interfere with Khwaja Sahib ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) lest he suffer total destruction. Whether Raj Prithviraj forgot this prophecy or ignored it is unknown, but he began to harass the Shaikh and trouble his followers. But Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishty ( Rahmatullah Allaih ), holding firm to the Islamic doctrine that, "Allah is with those who patiently persevere," steadfastly carried on his peaceful mission.
One day, however, he said, "the Prince will be captured alive, and his kingdom snatched away." This prophecy was proven true not long after.
The Prince was defeated by Sultan Shahabuddin, captured alive and brought into the presence of the Sultan, who ordered him executed. The power of the Rajputs was thus broken for more than three hundred years.

Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishty ( Rahmatullah Allaih ) carried on his work in Ajmer for 45 years, and millions entered Islam through his spiritual light and endeavours. Besides this great service, he also established permanent Sufi centres which were run by such mighty disciples as Khwaja Qutbudeen Khaki, Hazrat Nizamudeen Awliya, Hazrat Baba Fareed Ganj Shakar and Khwaja Nasirudeen Chiragh Dehlvi ( Rahmatullah Allaih ).
On the 29th Jamaad-us-Saani, before entering his bare cell for his usual meditations, he advised his attendants that he should not be disturbed. When his Khalifa-e-Azam, Khwaja Qutb-ud-deen Bakhtiyaar Kaaki ( Rahmatullah Allaih ), arrived from Delhi on the 6th Rajab, 633 AH, he found no answer to his polite knocking. Then the mureeds unhinged the door and there they found that their beloved Murshid had already left the world, at the ripe age of ninety-six. To the wonder and amazement of all, upon his forehead was inscribed letters of light which said: He was the beloved of Allah, and he died in the love of Allah.

To the wonder and amazement of all, upon his forehead was inscribed letters of light which said: He was the beloved of Allah, and he died in the love of Allah.

foremost exponent of Muslim religious poetry. Much of his professional life was spent in the three holy cities, where he became a famous teacher of the Qur'an. After his return to Egypt, where he managed a
Qur'anic school, he passed on to his Lord. The exact year of his death is not known, but 1296 is the most commonly given date.

Almost all of Hazrat Imam Sharfuddin Busiri Qaddas Allahu Sirra ul Azeez's written work takes the form of poetry, including a long and extraordinary poetic commentary on Christianity and Judaism, based on his study of the Bible. He also wrote a Diwan,
an anthology of poems on a wide range of subjects. His best-known work, however, is the Burdah ('Poem of the Cloak'), which rapidly became the most popular religious poem in the Islamic world, a
position which it retains to this day.
The Burda, or the Prophet's Mantle or Cloak, is a qasida (poem) composed by Imam Sharafuddin Muhammad Al-Busiri, may Allah have mercy on him. Imam Busiri was born in Egypt in 608 A.H. and died in 695 A.H. (corresponding to 1212 C.E to 1296 C.E.).
Imam Busiri composed the qasida after suffering from a stroke which left him partially paralysed. He prayed to Allah for a cure then fell asleep. In a dream, he saw himself reciting the qasida to the Holy Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings, who then touched the paralysed part of his body and threw his mantle or Burda over him. On awakening, he discovered he had been cured of his paralysis.
The verses of The Burda have since been learned by heart and inscribed on the walls of mosques and madrassas all over the Muslim world, and it is congregationally recited all over the world.

More than 90 commentaries have been written on this qasida, and it has been translated in Persian, Urdu, Turkish, Berber, Punjabi, French, and German, to name but a few languages.
The Burda is in 10 parts and has 160 verses all of which end with the Arabic letter Meem.
His tomb and mosque in the Anfushi district of Alexandria have recently been restored with the help of local benefactors, and are again playing an important part in the life of the city, attracting
visitors from around the world.
The present structure mainly dates from the year 1863, when Muhammed Said Pasha, the son of the well-known Egyptian/Albanian governor Muhammad Ali Pasha, sponsored a complete reconstruction of a much older and more modest structure. The architecture is of Ottoman inspiration, with three large domes and a courtyard with ablutions-fountain (sadrvan). Further remodelling took place in 1889 under the khedive Tawfiq, and again in the late 1990s. The mosque is noted for its fine mural calligraphy, which includes 94 verses of al-Busiri’s famous poem al-Burda inscribed in ta’liq script. There are also several important Qur’anic inscriptions by the calligrapher Abd al-Ghaffar al-Duri, together with dedicatory lines in Arabic and Turkish.

The reason for writing Qaseedah Burdah Shareef :
The writer HAZRAT IMAAM SAALIH SHARA-FUD-DEEN ABU ABDULIAH MUHAMMAD BIN HASAN AL-BUSAIRI R.A had become paralysed. His doctors and physicians gave up all hope of his recovery. Eventually in this state of complete helplessness and despair he composed this poem expressing the grandeur and excellence of Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam. Using this as his sole means of asking Allah Ta'alaa to cure him from his illness. He isolated himself in a quiet place one Thursday night and with complete devotion, concentration and sincerity/ began reciting this poem. While reciting it sleep overcame him. He had a vision of Sayyidina. Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam. He told Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam of his illness whereupon Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam passed his blessed hand over Imam Busairi's body. Through the barakat and blessing of Sayyidina, Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam Allah Ta’alaa granted him complete cure from his paralysis. When he awoke he found a scarf or shawl on his body which he had seen Sayyidina
Rasuluallah Sallallhu Alayhi Wasallam place on his paralysed limbs. This resulted in the poem being named "Qasidah Burdah" (The Poem of the Scarf).

In the morning when due to some necessity. he went to the bazaar, a pious dervish greeted him with salaam and requested him to recite the qasidah which he had composed in praise of Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam The poet said that I have composed many poems in praise of Rasuluallah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, which one do you wish to hear? The dervish replied: 'The one which begins with, A-min Tazak-kurin (i.e. Qasidah Burdah)". Upon this request the poet became wonder struck and said, "I take an oath that no one knows about this poem. Tell me the truth, from whom did you hear about it?" The dervish replied, "I take an oath by Allah that I heard it from you last night when in a dream you had recited it to Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, whereupon Sayyidina Rasuluallah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam became attentive towards you and because of its blessings Allah Ta'alaa granted you complete cure from your ailment". When the poet gave this poem to the dervish his secret became known to all the people and its barakat and blessings too became general for all.

When this poem reached Baha-ud-deen the governor of the country named Tahir, he so highly regarded and respected it that he would stand while listening to it.
It is also narrated that Sa'aadud-deen Farouqi, who was a viceroy of Baha-ud-deen, had became blind. In a dream he saw a pious person who told him to take the Qasidah Burdah from Baha-ud-deen and place it on
